How We Enabled Live Design Editing
After dropping out of college, I was building websites and mobile apps to support myself. In that process, I realized that I could easily change website content, colors, and fonts, but the same capabilities didn’t exist for mobile apps. I was unbelievably frustrated by having to re-submit mobile builds to the app store any time I wanted to change the color of a button (and not to mention the week it would take to get approved).
So to make life a bit easier, we built a way for users to make live design manipulations to their apps. Here is how it works:
When you make a change on a Hatch dashboard, it sends a PHP call to our servers. Then, the server knows to go into a JSON file (a file in which data is stored) and change an object field (the exact entry in the data). Hatch apps are pre-built to be determined by database content, rather than being hard-coded with specific colors, fonts, and layouts.
In simple terms, any app built with Hatch can be live edited without having to resubmit to the app store. You can now design your app on the go. Even after the app is in the hands of thousands of users.
