Careers at Hatch

Building the future of mobile

What we're working on

Hatch is a website that builds awesome apps. Users can pick a template and launch their custom app to iOS, Android, and web with just a few clicks-- it's that simple.

Right now, we're not only helping entrepreneurs launch their apps quickly and affordably, but also fielding some major global contracts, all while working to build a game-changing mobile app builder.

Thirteen years ago, a little product called WordPress was released. Today, they power over 25% of the world's websites. We're going to do the same for software applications.

We are a well-funded, Y Combinator backed company that's growing fast and finding some really exciting opportunities. Our users love us and it shows in our revenue numbers. At this point, working with Hatch isn't a gamble: We will win, but with a great team we'll win even bigger.

We're a young, energetic, creative team looking for brilliant people who aren't afraid to dive in on day one. With Hatch, you'll be given creative autonomy in a supportive work environment, and you'll be working on big challenges every day.

Full Stack Web Developer

We're looking for a creative, versatile developer to play a leadership role in building our product. We've developed a new way to quickly, inexpensively build mobile and web apps, but much of it hasn't been fully productized.

On our current team, everyone writes code ships product, but this will be our first hire that's 100% focused on writing code, as well as leading in major technical decisions and driving the growth of our engineering team. We're looking for someone who loves server-side development, and enjoys building product from the ground up. Although mostly focused on PHP web development, the role can change in scope depending on skill and interest.

We're an early stage company where you will drive major product decisions from day one. You'll be working closely with our leadership team with the opportunity to assume more responsibility as Hatch grows.

Qualifications:

  • You have a strong understanding of PHP backend development (or comparable server-side languages).
  • You are well-versed in Javascript.
  • You have experience working with a team to push and merge production-ready code.
  • You're comfortable with CSS, JQuery and responsive development.
  • You have a solid understanding of SQL or other querying languages.
  • You have experience with with REST APIs (JSON).
  • You care about building a quality, scalable, and maintainable product.
  • You're a strong communicator, and enjoy working on collaborative teams.
  • You thrive in fast-changing, fast-paced environments where each day looks different and responsibilities evolve quickly.

Bonus points for:

  • Startup experience
  • Familiarity with Laravel or comparable PHP frameworks
  • Experience with AWS (EC2)
  • Familiarity with Objective-C and Java

Compensation and benefits:

  • Competitive salary
  • Ground floor options
  • Flexible hours
  • Unlimited vacation and sick days (we require that all team members take at least 3 weeks of paid vacation per year)
  • Free onsite gym facility
  • Wednesday lunches with the team
  • A voice in the direction of the company

To apply, shoot Amelia (one of our cofounders) a note at amelia@hatchapps.com. A formal cover letter isn't necessary-- just write us a quick note in the body of your email telling us why you're interested in working for Hatch and attaching/linking to your resume, Github, LinkedIn or whatever else might be relevant.

Frontend Developer

We're looking for a smart, creative frontend developer to help us build our product. As a frontend engineer with Hatch, you'll be collaborating with our product team to design and build new user interfaces, and transform wireframes into crisp, beautiful web code.

In this role, you'd be building a new site from scratch every few weeks. Since we build web apps (in addition to mobile apps), we're constantly spinning up new web interfaces for each of our templates. You would be charged with building these sites, and then handing them off to our backend engineers who will then integrate your work into our product, making it possible for users to change colors, features, fonts, and more.

In addition to building web app frontends, you would be responsible for building static web views (to emulate our native mobile apps within the editor), as well as updating the editor and dashboard controls to reflect each template you build. You may also work on our Hatch website, blog, forum, or other public-facing sites.

We're not looking for someone to optimize a few buttons on our site; this is a role for someone who thrives on new projects, tough problems, and audacious ideas. This is a great role for a recent grad or someone just out of a code bootcamp that's looking for a role in which they can take on real responsibility and build on their skills.

Qualifications:

  • You have mastered HTML and CSS.
  • You take pride in building mobile-responsive sites.
  • You love using JQuery to add a subtle flair to your web code.
  • You are comfortable with Javascript.
  • You have an eye for design, and you enjoy thinking about how to make things look good and make sense to the user.
  • You are a systems thinker, constantly thinking about how your code will affect other parts of the product and how it will evolve in the future.
  • You thrive in fast-changing, fast-paced environments where each day looks different and responsibilities evolve quickly.
  • You care about building a quality, scalable, and maintainable product.
  • You are thirsty for progress. With you, a day without a big accomplishment never happens; you won't leave the office until you've built something amazing.

Compensation and benefits:

  • The best professional development experience you'll ever get paid for
  • Employee stock options
  • Flexible hours
  • Unlimited vacation and sick days (we require that all team members take at least 3 weeks of paid vacation per year)
  • A voice in the direction of the company

Operations Manager (a.k.a. all-around smart person)

We're looking for a clever, creative, ambitious operations manager to convert chaos into order. We're a small team that's growing fast and needs someone to keep important details in check and manage early functions that don't yet have a dedicated lead (e.g. customer support, inside sales, recruitment). Put simply, you'll be our go-to person for everything that doesn't yet have a go-to person. You'll report directly to the cofounders, and play sidekick as they attack big challenges in pursuit of our vision. From your role, you'll see everything, work with everyone, and learn a ton.

This job is perfect for a crazy smart recent grad looking for exposure to every part of a startup. We don't expect you to have all the skills and experience from day one, but the ideal candidate is smart, hard-working, and creative enough to figure it out.

Responsibilities:

  • You'll fill gaps across our team, stepping into roles in marketing, customer support, inside sales, and operations. For a while, you'll run them all. Then, you'll help us hire people to help.
  • You'll handle critical details and system development. From tracking documents to managing recruitment/onboarding to creating the occasional spreadsheet-- you'll have it handled.
  • Hire and manage contractors when you or other teammates are stretched too thin.
  • You'll manage the cofounders' schedules and make sure they're executing on their responsibilities.
  • You'll handle general admin (running payroll, keeping tabs on our books, manage the details of the business, raise holy hell when systems start edging toward chaos, etc).
  • You'll jump in and help your teammates whenever you're interested or needed.

Qualifications:

  • No job is too small (e.g. drafting documents, organizing information, coordinating meetings) or too big (e.g. stepping in for a cofounder that's out of town, financial forecasting, building our customer service systems).
  • You are a "consider it done" person. Once something is on your list, it's off everyone else's.
  • You can write. (And you're already seeing ways you could've written this job description better.)
  • You are borderline neurotic when it comes to details.
  • You don't wait for permission to fix a problem.
  • You are always searching for things to celebrate, and will jump on the chance to do something that will make a team member, customer, or investor smile.
  • You have no ego but plenty of confidence.
  • You're insanely wicked brilliant smart with something to prove.

What to expect from us:

  • The best professional development experience you'll ever get paid for
  • Your opinions aren't just welcome, they're expected
  • Ground floor options
  • Flexible hours
  • Unlimited vacation and sick days (we require that all team members take at least 3 weeks of paid vacation per year)
  • Free onsite gym facility
  • Wednesday lunches with the team
